Gary Neville has warned Jesse Lingard that no footballer has a ‘God-Given right’ to receive the send-off they may have hoped for.

Lingard, who’s set to leave Manchester United in the summer, didn’t feature in their 3-0 win against Brentford – the Red Devils’ final home match of the season.

Ralf Rangnick’s decision not to bring him on sparked Lingard’s brother to label the club as ‘classless’ in a post on social media.

The interim manager defended his decision to not hand Lingard some minutes in the closing stages, having given Juan Mata and Phil Jones, whose contracts are also up in the summer, farewell appearances.

But Neville believes the situation is ‘nonsense’, referring to how club legends Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce didn’t get their fond farewells.

Neville also spoke about how his final appearance in a Man United shirt ended in a ‘toilet’ at West Brom.

“There was a lot of nonsense spoken about [Jesse] Lingard”, he said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

“Jesse has been at the club a long time. He has done a good job.

Neville says Lingard does not have a ‘god-given right’ regarding a farewell

“But I saw Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce not play their last games for the club and not get a send-off.

“They were two of the greatest captains, one of them is probably the greatest ever captain Manchester United have ever had.

“The other is one of the greatest captains they have ever had. They did not get the send-off they wanted, a farewell from the fans.

“I’m not quite sure why Jesse Lingard deserves it. I was thrown away at West Brom in a toilet!

“Sometimes it just doesn’t work out, Jesse. The idea that they think they have a God-given right to get some minutes on the pitch the way they have played… All of them.

“[David] De Gea and [Cristiano] Ronaldo have held their own this season. They have performed well.

“Not one of them can have any complaints about whatever happens to them this summer.”
