Cristiano Ronaldo was a ‘vanity signing’ and Ralf Rangnick is a ‘supply teacher trying to get control of an unruly class’.

That’s according to Perry Groves, who insists there has been ‘no plan’ from Manchester United over the last few years.

The Red Devils lost 4-0 to Brighton on Saturday, meaning they will finish the season with their lowest points total in Premier League history.

And Groves believes this is down to years of poor planning and a lack of direction from the very top of the club.

“There’s no leadership from the top, there’s no vision, there’s no clear idea,” Groves told talkSPORT.

“Me and you disagree about the Ronaldo signing, but that was a vanity signing at the beginning of the season.

“That’s not one where you sit down and say, ‘This is the direction we’re going, this is the way we want to play, this player fits the profile of the players we want.’

“That was a vanity signing, they tried to keep the fans happy.

“Jadon Sancho, he shouldn’t have been a priority, they didn’t need him. They needed a centre-back and a centre-midfielder before him.

“They got [Jose] Mourinho in, he upset everybody.

“Solskjaer came in, did a great job, and Ed Woodward thought, ‘It’s going alright now’ and, again, to keep the fans on his side, he gave him the job.

“He was nowhere near an elite manager.

“Then it all came tumbling down, which was always going happen because he didn’t have the tactical nouse or the knowledge and he didn’t have the respect of the players as a manager, he did as a person.

“Then Rangnick came in and had no power over that group of players.

“He went into a dressing room with Ronaldo, with Pogba, with Fernandes all looking at him thinking, ‘I’m bigger than you’.

“It’s a disgrace from the players because they’re looking at him thinking, ‘I’m going to leave on a free and be off, or I’ll be here longer than you’.

“It was a bit like a supply teacher going in and trying to get control of an unruly class.”
