Ralf Rangnick has been told to take Marcus Rashford OUT of the Manchester United squad amid the forward’s struggles for form.

Fans fell in love with Rashford with his dynamic forward play and no-fear attitude when he burst onto the scene in 2016 but he’s been a shadow of the player he’s capable of being this season.

talkSPORT’s Dean Ashton is very worried about Rashford’s play and feels some time out of the side would do the 24-year-old some good.

Ashton also highlighted that Rashford’s teammates Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw cut ‘completely broken’ figures and they’re only being saved by Cristiano Ronaldo ‘papering over the cracks.’

On Manchester United’s epic 3-2 win over Tottenham, Ashton said: “To be fair to Spurs, they were by far the better team.

“They had way more possession, a higher XG (expected goals), they were just wasteful in the positions they were in.

“Ronaldo has papered over the cracks of what was a pretty average performance again from Manchester United.

“What he’s delivered, you can’t take that away from the team because he’s part of the team, but without those goals they’d have lost the game.”

Ashton continued: “Nemanja Matic, wow! I know he’s never been quick but Heung-min Son skipped past him, midfield players skipped past him, he just can’t hack it physically in that midfield anymore.

“Rashford, oh my word! I know I’ve seen it on telly but when you see it live, I could not believe the player I was watching.

“Shattered confidence, lack of interest, this is meant to be the club he’s grown up loving. He’s supposed to represent the supporters from Manchester and what it means to play for Manchester United. There just wasn’t any of that there.

“I think he needs taking right out of the way, out of the squad completely. There’s obviously an issue there mentally because he just doesn’t look right at all.”

Ashton added: “I don’t think we should just single out Marcus Rashford. There are a few players in that side who are completely broken. Their confidence is broken.

“Harry Maguire’s one of them. I don’t think he’s a bad player, I think he’s had very, very good games. But he is broken.

“The pressure that’s on him every week, which is right when you’re at a top club like that, but the huge scrutiny is affecting him. He needs the help to get that back.

“Shaw is another one, confidence completely broken.”

Man United have arguably their biggest match of the season as they take on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their last-16 clash in the Champions League.

Ahead of the match, Drive host Adrian Durham suggested the likes of Ronaldo could help the likes of Rashford, Maguire and Shaw get their confidence back.

Ashton responded: “We don’t know what Ronaldo’s doing behind the scenes but these players need help with their confidence.

“You don’t just all of a sudden become a terrible player. As a player, if you’re not right mentally and in terms of your confidence levels you can look a terrible player very, very quickly.

“But ultimately that can switch and that confidence can be changed… but at the moment I’d say there are quite a few players that are just so far below the levels that they’re clearly capable of.”
